A short reflection on producing my final news stories for the semester.

Transcript

Previously in my degree, my articles have been longer investigative pieces that have taken weeks of planning and research. However, this semester I have learnt to be more opportunistic in my reporting and ended up covering News Stories 3 and 4 in the same week.

This involved conducting 14 interviews in a matter of days, managing the contacts, pre-interviews, and follow-ups simultaneously.

I came across the poetry event by chance whilst visiting Auckland Art Gallery. I wrote my questions for the panellists and drafted the story whilst sat in the audience.

When recording the interviews, I asked the poets to move to a quieter part of the gallery, as the event had taken place in the main atrium where there was a lot of background noise. I wanted to ensure I had a clear transcript, as we looked at in Week 8’s lecture on recording audio.

I don’t think I would have had the confidence to approach the poet laureate, or been assertive in how I conducted the interviews prior to this semester, and I hope to take these skills forward with me in future reporting.
